We have used a satellite connection for a while but due to the very poor performances of those systems and the cost of subscriptions, we now use WiFi and 3G keys
We use mainly use an Apple MacBook computer.
It runs 6 to 7 hours on his internal battery
and never crashes !
and as a backup we have an Asus 1000HD for communications
this little pc gives us 6 to 7 hours of autonomy
Most of the time we connect via the Fon network
this gives us free Wifi

In Europe we use 3G usb keys, all of them are poor to very poor.
